MacPherson had a job for me at a town about thirty minutes’ drive away. It was a local TV star who’d won some viewers’ favourite award, and I had to wait around to ask my questions. The actor was giving everyone five minutes. Oh joy. By the time I did all that and got back, Finn was gone again, so I didn’t get to talk to him. So I had to wait till I saw him at the pub, and even then we only had five minutes during the event to talk—when it was our turn to speed “date.” Other than that, I’d have to talk to him afterwards, and it didn’t finish till nine.

As I stood in the doorway and observed everyone in the pub, guilt nibbled at my conscience. I turned up only because I’d promised Meg, but I didn’t want to encourage any of the men, so I’d worn jeans and a T-shirt and no make-up—zero effort, except the walking-here bit. My hair was in a messy bun because it was warm, and I hated having a hot, sweaty neck.

I’d also brought my notepad and pen for the breaks, so I could record how my dates had gone before I forgot the little details. I wasn’t sure what angle my story was going to have yet, but I was positive it would reveal itself to me by the time the night was over.

The room was full of young people. Some of them were what I’d call attractive, and others not so much. At least to my taste. The women’s fashion choices leaned towards lots of cleavage, sky-high heels, and fake caterpillar eyelashes. I had no doubt I could look so much more attractive with that kind of help, but the carrot wasn’t big enough for me tonight to bother. Hmm, I was so excited to be here. The sarcasm was strong in me tonight. Maybe I should check my attitude before I made everyone else sad. I plastered a smile on and stepped into the room.

I headed straight for the bar. Meg’s dad was serving, along with another guy I’d never seen before who looked to be in his thirties, with sandy-brown curly hair and a friendly smile. The new guy didn’t waste any time when I reached the bar. “What can I get you?” He had an American accent.

“A house white, thanks.”

He turned to get a glass, and Meg’s dad gave me a nod. “Hello, Avery. Giving the sergeant hell lately?”

I chuckled. “Just a little bit. Have to keep him on his toes.” Meg’s dad laughed and went to serve someone at the other end of the bar. The new guy put my drink on the counter and asked for the money. I gave it to him. “Are you going to be working here on the regular?”

“I am.” He put his hand out to shake mine. “Mike.”

I shook his hand. “Avery. Nice to meet you.”

“Likewise. You here for the dating thing?”

“Under duress from Miss Meg, yes.” I grinned.
